Boulder's Tuesday boardgames, and a cold one at Pattern Break.

The free, open Boulder board game meetup at Pattern Break Brewing — every Tuesday night since 2021. Bring a game, borrow one, or just show up and we'll deal you in.

Every Tuesday 6:30 pm – 10:00 pm Pattern Break Brewing
First time?

What you're walking into.

Twenty-ish friendly people, a few stacks of games on the tables, the smell of hops, somebody explaining the rules to Wingspan for the hundredth time. That's it. That's the whole vibe.

Always free

No membership, no cover, no organizer tips. We just love playing games. Pattern Break hosts us — buy a beer if you want.

All skill levels

Lifelong gamers and total first-timers, side by side every week. Several regulars love teaching — just say 'I'm new.'

Bring or borrow

Plenty of folks bring a stack every Tuesday. You don't have to. If you have a favorite, bring it; if not, jump in.

Solo welcome

Half of our newcomers show up alone. Five minutes later, they're at a table. Walk up, say hi — that's the whole trick.

Pattern Break Brewing

Boulder's revived neighborhood brewery on Foothills Pkwy. Independent, walkable, plenty of room for us to sprawl.

You're invited.
Why we love it here

Boards on the table, brews on the rail.

The whole reason this Boulder board game night works is the host. Pattern Break Brewing gave us room to spread out on Foothills Pkwy, a kitchen that doesn't rush you, and a beer list that makes 7pm feel like an event instead of a Tuesday.

Show up thirsty or full, drinking or not — nobody keeps tabs. But if you grab a pint or split a pizza, you're keeping the space that keeps us going.

What we play

Quick party rounds to four-hour epics.

Every Tuesday's a different lineup — depends who showed up and what they brought. Here's the spread you'll usually see, with a few of our regular hits in each lane.

Quick & social

15–30 min • 4–8 players

Loud, laughy, low-commitment. Great if you're showing up solo or want to break the ice before something heavier hits the table.

Midweight strategy

45–90 min • 2–5 players

The Tuesday-night sweet spot. Real decisions, room to chat, finishes before the brewery clears out.

Your first Tuesday

A simple checklist.

Bookmark this, glance at it on your drive over, and the rest is easy.

  1. Roll up between 6:30 and 7pm.Earlier is better if you want in on a heavy game — those tend to start by 7.
  2. Head to the back tables.Look for stacks of boxes, meeples on the table, and people having too much fun for a Tuesday.
  3. Say 'I'm new.'Magic words. Someone will pull up a chair and ask what kind of games you like.
  4. Bring a game — or don't.Either is welcome. If you bring one, it's a great icebreaker; if you don't, there are always extras.
  5. Grab a beer or snack (optional). The brewery is hosting us for free. A pint or some food helps keep this going.
  6. Plan to stay 1–3 hours.Stay for one game and head out, or stick through closing. Whatever fits your night.
Questions we get a lot

FAQ.

Do I need to RSVP?

Nope — just show up. We're at Pattern Break Brewing in Boulder every Tuesday 6:30 to 10pm. If we're full at one table, we grab another.

Is there a cost?

The group is completely free. No membership, no dues, no tipping the organizer. Pattern Break is the host, so we encourage you to grab a beer or some food while you're there.

I'm new to Boulder — is this a good way to meet people?

Probably the easiest. We get new-to-Boulder folks at the table almost every week. It's a low-pressure, regularly-recurring social setting where the icebreaker is already on the table — literally, in the form of a board game. Several of our regulars met everyone they know in Boulder through this group.

I'm visiting Boulder — can I drop in for one Tuesday?

Yes, please. Travelers are welcome. Pattern Break is a five-minute drive from downtown Boulder; if you're staying near Pearl Street, an Uber is under $10. Just show up at 6:30pm — no RSVP, nothing to sign up for.

I've never played 'serious' board games — can I still come?

Yes, and you'll be in good company. Half the table on any given night is learning a new game. Several regulars love teaching — just say 'I'm new, what's good?' when you walk up.

Do I need to bring a game?

Not at all. Plenty of people bring a stack every week. If you have one you love, bring it — fresh games are always welcome.

Is it kid-friendly?

Pattern Break Brewing is a brewery, so check their policy on minors — they've historically welcomed families before evening hours. The group itself is all-ages-in-spirit, and the games range from family-friendly to adult-strategy.

Where exactly in Pattern Break do you usually sit?

Toward the back of the brewery, around the bigger tables. If you don't see us right away, ask a staff member — they know us. Or just look for the table covered in cardboard boxes and meeples.

I'm coming alone — will I feel weird?

We get solo first-timers every week. The fastest fix: walk up to any table, say hi, ask what they're playing. You'll be dealt in within five minutes.

Are there other board game groups in Boulder?

A few — meetup.com has a couple of monthly groups, and Boulder's game stores host occasional play nights. We're the weekly recurring one at a brewery, and the only one we know of with cartoon avatars.

What if Tuesday is a holiday?

We usually still play unless Pattern Break is closed. Check the Discord or Facebook group for occasional cancellations.

Come play.

See you Tuesday.

Hang with us on Discord between Tuesdays for game polls, what's-coming-this-week, and the occasional "anyone up for board games on Sunday?" The Facebook group is still running too — either gets you in the loop.

Or just walk into Pattern Break Brewing on Tuesday at 6:30 pm. We'll be there.
